This book is odd. Now, I kinda like odd, so this is not necessarily a bad thing.
The book starts off with a young girl being murdered in Hong Kong. I know, charming. Then the book jumps forward in time and follows the lives of an English family who are living in Hong Kong because of the father’s occupation. Alice, one of the children, becomes haunted by the ghost of the young murdered girl. Throughout the novel Alice becomes haunted by other ghosts too.
Different chapters are narrated by different characters in the novel. This is interesting as you get insight into the different perspectives.
At times the novel felt like it was dragging a bit. This could just be me though, as I have been too busy to sit down and properly read for a long time, so I was only reading short bursts here and there.
The book has an awesome cover – I like the bright colours and the art style. I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but I always do and I haven’t been disappointed yet (ops, I lie – Zadie Smith’s ‘On Beauty’ has a great cover, but I hated the story, but this is the only exception I can think of).
Worth a read if you are looking for something a little different and out of the ordinary.
4/5.
